Summary of functions

The Icelandic Coast Guard (ICG) is a law enforcement agency that is responsible for search and rescue, maritime safety and security surveillance, and law enforcement in the seas surrounding Iceland. The ICG's operations are based on gathering, analyzing and distributing information in close cooperation with neighboring countries to create a surface picture as accurate as possible at any given moment to ensure maritime safety and security.

Safety Investigation Authority (Casualty Investigation Board)

Summary of functions

The Safety Investigation Authority (Casualty Investigation Board) shall operate independently of the public authorities and other investigators, the public prosecutor and the courts. The Board shall itself decide when there is cause to investigate a transport accident or other incidents, as provided for in the Act on the Investigation of Transport Accidents and in this Regulation.

The Transportation Safety Board  may investigate other accidents and incidents, if it considers that important for transport safety in general.

Maritime Traffic Service

Summary of functions

The Minister of Transport and Local Government is responsible for affairs concerning the Maritime Traffic Service and the Icelandic Maritime Administration administers their implementation. The objective of the MTD is to ensure the safety of navigation within the Icelandic exclusive economic zone (EEZ), the safety of passengers and their crews and enhance measures to prevent marine pollution from ships. The Maritime Traffic Service shall carry out tasks in accordance with the Maritime Traffic Service Act. The Maritime Traffic Service operates a vessel traffic monitoring and information system with a view to enhancing the safety and efficiency of maritime traffic, improving the response of authorities to incidents, accidents or potentially dangerous situations at sea, including search and rescue operations, and contributing to enhanced safety of mariners and a better prevention and detection of pollution by ships. The Maritime Traffic Service also controls and takes all necessary and appropriate measures to ensure that ship masters, operators or shipping agents as well as shippers or the owners of dangerous or polluting goods which are shipped with such vessels fulfil the requirements of the applicable legislation.
